Ambiguity

I was born and raised in West Philadelphia.

Growing up, I spent most of my free time playing basketball with friends at school. Like most inner city neighborhoods, there was trouble around every corner. After I got in a fight at school with some ruffians, my mom had had enough and shipped me cross country to live with her brother’s family where she said I could “make a better life for myself”, whatever that means.

I packed up what little possessions I had and took a taxi to sunny California. I remember the first time I arrived at my uncle’s house, it was between 7-8pm and I was happy to rid myself of that cab driver’s stench. I stood outside the house and tried to absorb its mass. I had finally arrived.

This would be my kingdom one day, I thought, but for now I’ll just settle for prince. Ahh, sweet sweet Bel-Air…
